Each year, The Reserve Club opens its doors to a host of charitable organizations and functions, and for the 12th year in a row, this has included The Mended Hearts, Inc. Annual Mended Hearts Golf Tournament. On September 22, 2014, with perfect late summer weather, more than 100 golfers and volunteers filled into the club, ready for a great time to support a great cause!

Mended Hearts, Inc. (MHI) is a national organization comprised entirely of people affected by heart disease- patients, their families and caregivers, medical professionals, and individuals interested in supporting the cause. There are currently 300 chapters of the non-profit educational organization throughout the United States, and 2 chapters in Canada. The Aiken chapter of MHI began organizing their Annual Golf Tournament in 2002 at The Reserve Club- one of the oldest in Aiken- to raise funds for cardiac improvements across the community, and since its inception 12 years ago, has raised more than $138,000 for this purpose! The Aiken chapter has used the funds to make numerous strides across the city, including 12 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for emergency responders in Aiken County; the initiation of the University of South Carolina Aiken’s (USCA) Cardiac Enhancement Program; equipment and aids for the USCA School of Nursing and Aiken Technical College Nursing Department; the Aiken Technical College’s Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program for advanced training; and donations to the American Heart Association.

Yesterday’s captain’s choice tournament drew 34 four-man teams. Each player received a round of golf with cart use, range balls, lunch, and prizes for the lowest score, the shot nearest to the hole, and several other categories of recognition. The Reserve Club continues to be exceedingly proud of hosting an organization of incredible men and women that volunteer their time and efforts to spread hope and encouragement throughout Aiken to people personally affected by heart disease. (Its 107 members have visited a total of 13,850 heart patients for a total of 28,759 visits and 3,867 families of patients since the chapter opened in September of 2001!)
