Horse Country

During the late 1800’s many wealthy visitors were attracted to Aiken because of its excellent climate, especially during the winter months. This quickly established the city as a Winter Colony that afforded residents opportunities for equestrian sports. Today, Aiken is still considered “Horse Country” and not only has numerous stables throughout the area, but also plays host to major equestrian events such as Aiken Triple Crown, the Aiken Trials and the extremely popular Aiken Steeplechase which takes place every Spring and Fall. In addition to these races, Aiken is also home to a thriving polo community. With about 50 polo fields in the area, it’s no wonder that Aiken has played host to the Gold Cup numerous times, including the past few years.
