History

Aiken, South Carolina’s rich history dates back to the 1830’s when the town became one of the first destinations on the eastern railways. Attracting visitors from the extreme heat of other Southern towns, Aiken prospered and was quickly filled with stately mansions, awe-inspiring churches and a thriving social scene, anchored by equestrian races. Over the years, Aiken became the winter home of families such as the Whitneys and the Vanderbilts and was frequented by Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. Today’s current restorations keep past traditions alive and well in the architecture and spirit of the retail and residential communities.
